About

Hi, I'm David,

Welcome.
I began my journey into therapeutic work in 2010 when I decided I wanted to connect with people, and myself, on a deeper level.

I initially gained a bachelor's degree in counseling in 2013 and furthered my study in 2017, completing a Graduate Diploma in Sociology.
Over the last few years, I have upskilled in other areas, including sound therapy, breathwork and somatic trauma approaches. My approach is primarily informed by Internal Family Systems Therapy. But I like to bring a variety of approaches to support the uniqueness of each client(s). which you can read about on a blog post if interested.
I have worked as a counselor in schools, as a mental health worker and a therapist in private practice. I have worked with clients both face-to-face and phone /online. Ranging from 6 years old to 76, with presenting issues ranging from, relational breakdowns, grief, depression, anxiety and sexuality to name a few.
I live in rural Waikato, New Zealand. I enjoy the beach and love music, reading, and writing.
I have four children ranging from toddler to teen and have been married over 20 years
First time in therapy?
If you have not had an experience with a counselor or therapist, you may find the concept a bit unusual , or even a bit scary. However, the point of therapy in it's most basic form is to have someone from a neutral position, enter into your world and support you in ways others haven't, or can't.

My Approach
As humans, we are innately relational. We are born into cultures, communities, and families that have their own unique set of values, expectations, and of course behaviors.
Our development is molded by these aspects, and therefore shapes us into the people we are today.
However, as we grow, we may come to find that many of the aspects of our conditioning haven't always had a particularly helpful or healthy result and may not fit with how we desire to be present in our lives.
Perhaps we may feel stuck in addictive or compulsive behaviors, negative thought patterns, and difficult relational dynamics that feel somewhat immovable and at times completely overwhelming.
And it's often difficult to know where to start, to make the changes we desire.
My goal in therapy is to help highlight and explore these many aspects of our lives: the stories of our early and present lives, our relationships, and how we make sense of the world. I believe as we return to these early experiences and bring compassion, understanding, and challenge to ourselves, we can access the possibility of change.
My goal is to make you feel that all the parts of who you are, are welcome.
I offer a non-pathologizing, collaborative approach, working at the client(s) pace, while being attentive to cultural and personal differences.
